The Escentric Guide to Sage Cleansing

How to use sage, choose your blend, & create a cleansing ritual that feels like your own.

Sage cleansing can be a simple way to pause, refresh your surroundings, and mark a moment of renewal.

Whether you're resetting after a long day, moving into a new space, beginning a new chapter, or simply creating a few quiet minutes for yourself, your ritual doesn't need to be complicated.

We believe the most meaningful rituals are the ones that fit naturally into everyday life.

How to Use Sage: A Simple Cleansing Ritual ⊹ ࣪ ˖ ໒꒱

Step 01 — Set Your Intention

Before lighting your sage, take a moment to think about what you want from your ritual.

Perhaps you want to release the stress of the day, create a calmer environment, regain focus, or simply start fresh.

Your intention can be as simple as: “I release what no longer serves me and welcome fresh energy.”

Step 02 — Open Your Space

Open a window or door before beginning.

This provides ventilation while also becoming a symbolic part of the ritual — creating an opening to release what you're ready to leave behind and welcome something new.

Step 03 — Light Your Sage

Hold your sage bundle at an angle and light the tip.

Allow it to catch briefly before gently blowing out the flame. Your sage should smoulder rather than remain actively burning, producing a gentle stream of smoke.

Keep a heat-resistant bowl or holder underneath to catch any loose embers.

Step 04 — Cleanse Mindfully

Slowly move through your space, gently allowing the smoke to travel through the areas you'd like to refresh.

You may want to pay particular attention to:

  • Entrances and doorways
  • Corners of the room
  • Your bedside
  • Workspaces
  • Meditation or journaling areas
  • Spaces where you spend the most time

There is no need to rush. Move at your own pace and return your thoughts to the intention you set at the beginning.

Step 05 — Pause & Reset

When you've finished cleansing your space, take a quiet moment before moving on with your day.

Breathe deeply.

Notice your surroundings.

Consider what you're choosing to release — and what you'd like to carry forward.

Sometimes the most meaningful part of a ritual is simply giving yourself permission to pause.

Step 06 — Extinguish Completely

Gently press the burning end of your sage into a heat-resistant bowl or holder until it has completely stopped smouldering.

Allow the bundle to cool before storing it somewhere dry for your next ritual.

Disclaimer: Never leave burning or smouldering sage unattended. Keep away from children, pets, flammable materials and smoke-sensitive individuals. Always use in a well-ventilated space.
